Actors and Designers

Unexpected Stage is seeking cast members, an Assistant Stage Manager, Company Manager/Covid Safety Officer, Sound Designer and House Manager for Sophisticated New Ones, by Keith Powell. All positions are paid.

This production will rehearse in May 2022 and run in June 2022. All performances will take place at the River Road Unitarian Congregation in Bethesda, MD, where Unexpected Stage is in residence. All positions are paid. Unexpected Stage is committed to following the CDC and theatreWashington Covid Safety guidelines. All members of our team must be fully vaccinated. Synopsis: Long since given up on love, Avery has made herself content quietly running an antique repair shop with her adult son in the suburbs of Philadelphia. But when a charming new man enters the shop and her life, Avery’s past, present and future collide, forcing her to make a decision that will have lasting implications on her family. Set in 2007 during Obama’s political rise, the play asks the question: what do we lose in the face of progress?

Casting for:

H—Black, male, mid-to-late 50s; represents the future and the possibility of starting over.

Satcher –Black, male, mid-to-late 20s; represents the past and preserving history.

Avery—Black, female, mid-to-late 50s; caught in the middle, represents the present‚ she’s always aware of the practical implications of the “now.”

Keith Powell, playwright, is an American television actor, writer, director, and web series creator, known for his role as James “Toofer” Spurlock on 30 Rock, and for creating and starring in the web series Keith Broke His Leg, for which he won several Indie Series Awards in 2016. He is also a recurring character on This is Us and has recently directed for the Hallmark Channel.
